Christian Talk

Cora was always full of questions--questions like: How many animals were on the ark? How did Jonah keep from drowning in the whale's tummy? How far away are the stars? Can we take a trip to one of them? One day Cora came to her mother with another question. "Mom, who made God?" "Nobody," her mother answered. "Then where did God come from?" asked Cora. "He didn't come from anywhere--He just always was," Mom said. "I'm afraid I can't explain it so that you can really understand, honey." "But He had to come from somewhere," Cora insisted. Mom shook her head. "Our minds are not as great as God's mind, and there are some things we can't understand this side of heaven," she replied. "For now we just have to accept the fact that God has no beginning or end. He always existed and always will exist." Mom hesitated and then took off her wedding ring. "Maybe this will help you," she said, handing it to Cora. "I want you to tell me where this ring begins and where it ends." Mom motioned to the shiny gold band. Cora looked at the perfect circle. "It doesn't start or stop anywhere. It's a circle-- it doesn't have a beginning or an end." "And that's like God, Cora. God is eternal. He never had a beginning, and He has no ending. We think of our lives in minutes and days and weeks and years, but with God, it isn't like that. The Bible says that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years is like a day." "Oh," said Cora uncertainly. Then she smiled. "Okay. I'll try to remember that God is like this ring," she said as she handed it back to her mother. "He has no beginning or end." "That's right," said Mom, "and God's love is like that too. Even though He's eternal, Jesus was willing to become human and die for our sins so we could be saved and live with Him forever. No matter what, His love for us will never end." CHARLES VANDERMEER How About You? Aren't you glad God is too great for a human mind to fully understand? That's one of the things that makes Him God! It's good to ask questions and learn about Him from the Bible, but don't worry if you can't understand how He could have no beginning or end. He is greater than we can imagine, and we can trust Him. Thank Him for being so great and wonderful--and for loving you so much. Today's Key Verse: FROM EVERLASTING TO EVERLASTING, YOU ARE GOD. (NKJV) (PSALM 90:2) Today's Key Thought: God is eternal.

Together Too Much

6/4/2020
Tessa shook her head when Taylor suggested they spend time together after school. "Not today," said Tessa. "I have other things to do." "Aw, come on," said Taylor. "Whatever it is, I could help you." "Not really," Tessa replied. "I have to practice the piano." "I could just come in and listen," offered Taylor. "Look, Taylor," said Tessa, "we were together last night after school--and Monday night too. And we spent a lot of time together last weekend. I like doing stuff with you, but I have...

Doing Chores Got You Down?

6/3/2020
Bonnie walked listlessly into Grandma's kitchen and sank into a chair. "It's not fair!" she said miserably. "Mom knows I hate doing the dishes. I would rather do any other chore than dishes. I would gladly mow the lawn or do the laundry, anything but dishes!" "Bonnie, you know your mother has to work a lot this summer, and she really needs your help at home," Grandma replied. "I know, Grandma, but dishes? Why can't I do the other stuff and Mom can do the dishes?" "Did you know that I used to...

An Old Piece of Wood

6/2/2020
Carter was helping his dad pile firewood in the backyard when their next-door neighbor came over. "Looks like you've got some nice walnut here," Mr. Stevens remarked as he stooped down and picked up a piece of wood that Carter's dad had trimmed off a tree. "Mind if I borrow this for a week?" "For a week?" asked Dad. He smiled. "Help yourself--there's no need to return it. If you see anything else you can use, you're welcome to it." "Thanks," said Mr. Stevens, "but this will do for now." With...

Forgotten Combination

6/1/2020
"I can't get my new locker open." Kadence frowned at the paper in her hand. "Here, take this and read the numbers to me, will you, Aubree?" "Sure." Aubree read the directions slowly as Kadence turned the dial, and soon the door opened. "You'd better memorize that combination," said Aubree. "Nah," said Kadence. "I'll just take a picture of it so it's on my tablet." She held her tablet over the piece of paper, snapped a picture, then threw the paper away. "We have a new verse for the week,"...

The Unused Gift

5/31/2020
"Mom, can we go out to eat today?" Cameron pleaded. "We haven't gone out in a while." Mom sighed and gave her son a tiny smile. "Sorry, honey, we just don't have the money for that right now." "Hey, did we ever use that gift card Grandma gave us last year?" Cameron asked. "You know, I'm not sure let me check." Mom grabbed her purse and started rummaging through the contents. "Here it is!" Mom held up the gift card triumphantly. "Good thinking, Cameron! I forgot all about this." "Pastor Steve...

Before It's Too Late

5/30/2020
When Reagan arrived home from school, her mother was standing on a stepladder, changing a light bulb in the hallway. "I have a new appreciation for light bulbs," said Mom with a grin. "Until this one burned out, I didn't realize how dark this hallway could be." Reagan sighed as she put down her books. "Anna's grandma died yesterday," she said soberly. "Oh, I'm sorry," said Mom. "Anna must feel very sad." "She does--especially because it's been a long time since they went to see her grandma,...

The Yard Sale

5/29/2020
"Wow! What a lot of people!" Ross exclaimed. He and his sister Stephanie surveyed the scene before them. People were looking at the variety of items arranged on tables along the driveway and on the lawn. Mom sat near the garage with her money box. "I guess yard sales are a big thing." "They sure are," said Stephanie. "Hey, Ross! Remember the race car you made for the derby last year? It's already sold." "Sold!" Ross frowned. "I didn't want to sell my race car!" Stephanie's eyes widened. "You...

A Lesson for Will

5/28/2020
"What's the matter, Cojack?" Will squatted down beside his puppy's basket. "Are you lonely? Maybe I can stay home with you this morning." Even as he spoke, Will knew that wasn't likely. It was Sunday morning, and his family was getting ready for church. Dad came out to see what was going on. "Why aren't you dressed, Will? It's almost time to leave. You'd better hurry." Will looked down at the dog. "I think Cojack wants me to stay home with him this morning. Can I, Dad? I'm tired of getting...

New Adventures

5/27/2020
Hannah's pet ferret, Sam, stepped carefully through the grass. It was his first time walking outside on the new leash Hannah had just bought at the pet store. The fur on his tail was all puffed up, a sign that he was excited or scared. "It's all right, Sam," Hannah said. She picked up the ferret and hugged him close. "I know it's big and scary, but I'm here. I love you, and I'd never let anything happen to you." "Hannah!" her mother called from the house a while later. "Come inside now. You...

Choosing Skye

5/26/2020
"Dad, let's get her." Liam pointed to a puppy wrestling several others. His future companion might not know it yet, but he knew which puppy was the one for him. "Are you sure?" Dad asked. Liam beamed. "Yup!" Liam took his new friend home and named her Skye. The first day was tough. Skye was difficult to handle and wouldn't stay still. She even hid under the couch and refused to come out. "Give her some time," Dad told Liam. "It's probably scary for her to be in a new place." The next day...

Price of Freedom

5/25/2020
On Memorial Day, Tyler glanced around the cemetery. "Look at all the flags waving in the breeze," he said, handing Dad the pots of flowers they had brought. "Dad, why do only some of the graves have flags flying beside them?" Nicole asked. She pointed to a special section of the cemetery. "All those over there have them." "Those are graves of men and women who served in our country's armed forces. Many of them gave their lives to protect our freedom," Dad explained. "Some towns have special...

Sticky Situation at the Grocery Store

5/24/2020
This time I've really done it, Juliana thought. Just moments before, she had been shopping for groceries with her stepmother. She had helped put cheese and bananas in the cart. Then, at the checkout line, she spotted the racks of bubble gum and candy bars for sale. Glancing around to be sure nobody noticed her, Juliana snatched a bright pink pack of gum. She hid it under her shirt as she and her stepmom crossed the parking lot to their minivan. "What's that under your shirt, honey?" Maria,...

A Very Bad Day

5/23/2020
Graham sat down next to his dad on the couch and sighed. "Is something bothering you?" Dad asked. "I had a bad day at school today," Graham replied quietly. "I'm sorry," said Dad. "Want to tell me about it?" "Well, on the way to school, a boy on the bus threw a wad of gum, and it got stuck in my hair," said Graham. "Our principle had to use an ice cube to unstick it!" "And I suppose that made you late for class," Dad said. Graham nodded. "Yeah, so before going to lunch, I had to finish the...

Poison Ivy Tree

"How's the wood chopping going?" Kara's mom asked as she set the lunch plates on the table. "It's going well," Dad replied. "I found several dead trees that were ready to come down." After the family thanked God for their meal and began to pass the food, Dad chuckled and said, "You know, I spent all morning avoiding a tree I thought was alive because it was full of green leaves. It wasn't until I stepped back and looked up that I realized it was a dead tree that was completely covered in...

"How about showing Pastor Lopez to his room, Caden?" suggested Mom when the visiting pastor arrived for the weekend. "Sure. You're going to use my room," Caden told the pastor, then led the way. "I left some space in the closet for you, and I cleared out the top dresser drawer." Caden switched on the overhead light in his room. "Oh, I forgot." He picked up a lamp from his desk. "This lamp doesn't work, but Mom said you could use the one from her room. I'll get it." "Maybe I can repair that...

The noise of the polisher buzzed in Thabo's ears as he approached his dad in the driveway. Dad had been working on this old car for months. "Hey, buddy!" Dad turned off the polisher. "Come see how good this paint is looking with a bit of spit and polish." "That's gross, Dad." Normally Thabo would've laughed at his dad's jokes, but today his heart was as heavy as the bag he'd packed for camp. Dad frowned. "You're getting ready for junior church camp. Are you nervous?" Thabo shrugged. "They...

At least her family survived--some of her friends' family members had not been so lucky. When Kya reached the crude homemade shelter where her family had...

"When they hear Mrs. Hart playing her accordion, many come to Bible club." "The children also love the colorful pictures we use for telling Bible stories," added Mrs. Hart. I was going to make a cup of hot chocolate yesterday and couldn't find the stuff." "I told you I needed to experiment a little since the kitchen is new," replied Mom.
